Compansated Churches

During the Chinese-French war between 1884 and 1885, the Taiwanese people were hostile towards all foreigners and burned down the churches Mackay had built. Later, Lui Mingchaun compansated him with ten thousand liang (a unit of weight equal to 50 g) of Mexican money in silver, and Mackay rebuilt seven destroyed churches with the money. In Mackay’s design for these churches, the walls were made of clay (called earth brick) and bricks, the roofs were western beams covered by Taiwanese roof tiles, topped with five-tiered steeples, and decorated with different symbolic patterns, such as the eastern and western hemispheres, burning bushes, candles and so on. These “compansated churches” are the following: Heshangjiu (currently located at Taipei Lujiu, built in 1883), Baliben (currently located at Taipei Bali, built in 1884), Xikou (currently located at Taipei Songshan, built in 1884), Xindian (built in 1884), Fangxi (currently located at Taipei Dalongdong, built in 1885), and Mengjia (currently located at Taipei Wanhua, built in 1889).
