According to MacKay’s diary, Nogi Maresuke, the third Japanese-appointed governor of Taiwan, came to visit him in Tamsui in December 1896 and took a tour of his museum. In January 1897, Governor Maresuke sent a photographer to take pictures of MacKay’s collections, showing how much he valued them.
MacKay’s diary also mentions that while he was hosting Governor Maresuke, a photographer sent by the government administration took a picture of MacKay studying his specimens, with a specimen shelf and a globe next to his desk, dressed in Chinese clothing with a Qing dynasty style skullcap. This picture affords us a glance of the museum and study room as they originally appeared.
